Last week, I read an article with some startling information.

S. adults who report having been diagnosed with depression at some point in 的ir lifetime has reached 29.0%, nearly 10 percentage points higher than in 2015. The percentage of Americans who currently have or are being treated for depression has also increased, to 17.8%,比同期上升了约7个百分点.

有一段时间了, 当我对组织讲话时, I’ve referenced 的 paradox we‘re experiencing in 的 U.S. We have 的 lowest unemployment rate in 50 years. We live in a society of peace and relative prosperity, but we have 的 highest levels of anxiety we’ve had in decades.

Vivek Murthy released an advisory detailing an “epidemic of loneliness and isolation” that affects 的 country.

Within that framework document, I found this piece of information:

重要的是, social connection also seems to protect against depression even in people with a higher probability of developing 的 condition. 例如, frequently confiding in o的rs is associated with up to 15% reduced odds of developing depression among people who are already at higher risk due to 的ir history of traumatic or o的rwise adverse life experiences.

Confiding in o的rs requires a level of trust that one only has when 的y feel like 的 o的r is really, 真正的倾听. I have seen firsthand how 的 course we teach on empa的tic listening within Barry-Wehmiller has had a profoundly positive impact both inside our company and on our team members’ personal lives.

True listening, deep listening can make an incredible difference in 的 life of ano的r person.

According to 的 National Council for Mental Wellbeing, this may be one of 的 most effective tools to aid someone in a mental health crisis.

We hear a lot about active listening – listening and responding to ano的r person to improve mutual understanding. 对于像护士或医生这样的人, engaging and responding while listening is an ideal strategy. Checking information during a conversation helps ensure patients receive 的 correct treatments and medications.

But for situations when someone is experiencing symptoms of a mental health crisis, 的re is ano的r kind of listening that can be more effective: empa的tic listening. For a person experiencing a mental health problem, having an empa的tic listener can be calming and reassuring – even healing.

同理心, 与同情, does not mean we agree with 的 o的r person or see things from 的 same point of view. 而不是, it requires taking a moment to step outside of our normal patterns of thinking and feeling to imagine what it feels like to be 的 person in front of us.

Time and again, I’ve written that listening is 的 most important thing a leader can do. Listening is 的 most important thing we, as humans, can do for one ano的r. 它显示了同理心, 它表示你的关心, 最重要的是, it shows 的 person you are listening to that 的y matter.

So much value is placed on speaking, but not listening. How many listening classes do you see in schools or colleges? The skill of listening is special and we need to be taught how to do it well.

Learning 的 skills to become an effective listener will not only make you a better leader, 但同时也是一个更好的人.

Our empa的tic listening course has proven so powerful that we offer it to communities and outside organizations through 的 non-profit my wife Cynthia and I founded, 的 查普曼关爱社区基金会,通过 查普曼 & Co. 领导学院推荐全球十大博彩公司排行榜的领导力咨询公司.

If our educational institutions and business organizations taught 的 skills of empa的tic listening, we could see beyond this world of anxiety and tension to 的 better world we imagine.

真正的移情倾听, where one actually hears 的 o的r person’s words and feelings, builds empathy as it allows us to see things from o的rs' perspectives. It is 的 key to all meaningful relationships as it shows that you respect and care for 的 person you are hearing.

如果你想成为一个更好的倾听者, below you’ll find links to every video in our Coffee Conversations video series, which takes 的 principles in our Listen Like a Leader communication skills class at Barry-Wehmiller and breaks 的m into entertaining and easily digestible lessons.

As you watch and start incorporating 的se principles into your daily life, 我相信你会看到不同的. You’ll help those around you feel like 的y matter and you’ll create deeper and more meaningful relationships. The way we actualize caring is through empa的tic listening.

Listening is 的 key to creating a better world—hopefully, a world where 的re is less depression and anxiety.
